Overturned Vehicle, Outer Loop of I-495 Between Conn. and 355

by Matt Jorge

Around 1335 hours on the afternoon of Saturday July 21, Rescue Company 2 was dispatched for multiple reports of a vehicle overturned on the Capitol Beltway. First arriving units found a single car which had flipped over the Jersey barrier from the inner loop onto the outer loop and came to rest on the passenger side. The sole occupant was unable to remove themselves from the vehicle. Rescue Squad 742 arrived on scene and began stabilization with Paratech struts and wedges, then tied back with chains to Truck 706. The Squad and Truck crew then cut the A, B, and C posts of the sedan and folded down the roof, obtaining access to the occupant. The EMS units on scene then evaluated and transported the patient to a local hospital. The squad crew packed up their tools and returned to service.

Glenmont House Fire

by Matt Jorge

At 1837 on the 4th of July, the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad, along with nearby units from Kensington and Hillandale were alerted for a house fire on the 13200 block of Lutes Drive. The caller reported black smoke coming from the house at that location. Rescue Squad 742, Ambulance 742D, Chief 742, and Chief 742C responded on the initial dispatch. Rescue Squad 742 arrived on the scene just behind the Engine and Tower from station 18. While the Tower forced the door, PE718 stretched a line to the front door. All 3 units made entry into the structure together, immediately meeting low visibility and high heat conditions. RS742 started a search of the structure and ventilated through windows as they went. The primary search was completed with negative results. RS742 crew met back up with company 18 after the search was completed and assisted with opening up the walls and ceilings. Fire had extended from the 1st floor into the attic, and units reported that embers were falling down into the cellar. The fire was controlled quickly, with extensive overhaul needed to put out hot spots in the subfloor and pipe chases. Chief 742 assisted BC704 with command while Chief 742C was the Division 1 supervisor. M742C responded on the RID, and A742E was called to the scene later to transport a firefighter from the scene for heat related illness. Crews operated on the scene for approximately 2 1/2 hours. The cause of the fire was determined to be related to plumbing work done on the house earlier that day.

by Matt Jorge

At 0035 hours on February 10, 2012, units were dispatched to the inner loop of the Capital Beltway between University Blvd and New Hampshire Ave for a report of a single vehicle overturned.  Paramedic Engine 716 and Truck 716 arrived on scene to find a single car resting on its side with the driver still inside.  Battalion Chief 701 assumed command and Chief 742 was assigned to coordinate the extrication of the patient.  Rescue Squad 742 provided scene lighting and pulled hydraulic extrication tools and electric saws.  At the same time, the truck crew stabilized the car and the  engine crew pulled and charged a 2” hoseline to protect the scene.  The squad and truck crews then removed the roof of the car to allow for the safe extrication of the trapped driver.  Medic 701 transported the patient to a local trauma center.

Working Fire with Occupant Trapped

by Matt Jorge

RS742 was dispatched at 0400 on the Rapid Intervention Dispatch (just after initial dispatch) to the 4700 block of Iris Street for the house fire on Thursday November 2.  Units arrived on scene to find heavy fire from the basement and first floor.  A single occupant met crews in the front yard and confirmed that there was someone trapped inside the house.  Crews conducted a rapid search of the bedroom through a second floor window using the Vent, Enter and Search technique and were assisted with additional interior crews.  A victim was located in a bedroom in quadrant B, however extrication was impeded due to the elevated height of the windows in the bedroom and fire blocking the exit through the house.  RS742′s driver worked with the aerial tower 718 to cut away the window sill using a saw.  Visibility at the window was poor due to heavy smoke from the basement and first floors.  After the window sill was removed, RS742 driver ascended the ladder, met with a crew from Engine 718 and removed the victim down via a ground ladder from the second floor.  Conditions within the bedroom rapidly deteriorated as the bedroom door burned through. RS742 driver entered the bedroom to assist interior crews and guide them to the wall where the window sill had been removed.  Command sounded the evacuation tones soon after an adjacent bedroom reached the flashover stage.  Crews rapidly exited the bedroom just prior to flames extending from the windows.  Firefighting was limited to exterior operations for the remainder of the incident.  RS742′s crew then isolated the utilities and assisted with exterior firefighting operations. Unfortunately, the victim succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

One Overturned on 16th Street

by Matt Jorge
On the evening of June 10th, Rescue Squad 742B was dispatched to the 8500 block of 16th Street for a collision with a report of entrapment.  Once on the scene, RS742B found a single vehicle overturned in the woods with at least one patient severely pinned.  The two door vehicle came to rest lying on its roof, located on top of an elevated manhole cover.  Due to severe passenger compartment impingement, it was not immediately evident if there were additional patients in the vehicle.  C742 assumed command and C742C was assigned extrication division.

RS742B immediately began to stabilize the vehicle with adjustable chains attached to the underbody of the car and anchored to a wooden utility pole.  Stepchocks were also used to provide additional stabilization.  T716 and E719 removed tree branches to gain access to the vehicle.  RS742B then utilized hydraulic rescue tools to completely remove the passenger door.  The roof had completely crushed the passenger seat, which impeded access to the driver.  The seat was cut and forced away using the hydraulic rescue tools.  This allowed access to the driver, who was in cardiopulmonary arrest and unable to be brought back to life.  The hydraulic rescue tools were then utilized to gain access to the back seat of the vehicle to check for additional occupants.  No additional victims were located.  The scene was then turned over to MCP for accident reconstruction.  In total, the crew of RS742B was able to stabilize the vehicle and gain access to the patient less than 12 minutes after arriving in the scene.

Collision on Randolph Road

by Matt Jorge
Shortly before 0500 on the morning of Wednesday October 19, Rescue Squad 742, Ambulance 742E, and Engine 718 were dispatched for a report of a car into a tree on Randolph Road near Kennedy High School. Engine 718 arrive on scene first and found a pickup truck with major back-end and frame damage. Rescue Squad 742 pulled up and stabilized the vehicle. When it became apparent that there was not enough room to get the driver out of the vehicle, the Squad crew pulled hydraulic extrication tools to pull back the door and perform a “third-door conversion” by removing the body of the truck between the driver’s door and the pickup bed. The patient was removed from the vehicle within minutes and packaged by the Engine and crew of the Ambulance. The patient was transported to a local hospital by the ambulance under the care of a medic from the Engine. The remaining units packed up their equipment and returned to service.
