At 0035 hours on February 10, 2012, units were dispatched to the inner loop of the Capital Beltway between University Blvd and New Hampshire Ave for a report of a single vehicle overturned. Paramedic Engine 716 and Truck 716 arrived on scene to find a single car resting on its side with the driver still inside. Battalion Chief 701 assumed command and Chief 742 was assigned to coordinate the extrication of the patient. Rescue Squad 742 provided scene lighting and pulled hydraulic extrication tools and electric saws. At the same time, the truck crew stabilized the car and the engine crew pulled and charged a 2” hoseline to protect the scene. The squad and truck crews then removed the roof of the car to allow for the safe extrication of the trapped driver. Medic 701 transported the patient to a local trauma center.
