Shortly before 0500 on the morning of Wednesday October 19, Rescue Squad 742, Ambulance 742E, and Engine 718 were dispatched for a report of a car into a tree on Randolph Road near Kennedy High School. Engine 718 arrive on scene first and found a pickup truck with major back-end and frame damage. Rescue Squad 742 pulled up and stabilized the vehicle. When it became apparent that there was not enough room to get the driver out of the vehicle, the Squad crew pulled hydraulic extrication tools to pull back the door and perform a “third-door conversion” by removing the body of the truck between the driver’s door and the pickup bed. The patient was removed from the vehicle within minutes and packaged by the Engine and crew of the Ambulance. The patient was transported to a local hospital by the ambulance under the care of a medic from the Engine. The remaining units packed up their equipment and returned to service.
