by Andrew Young

Around 0400 hours on the morning of Friday, December 12, 2008 the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad was alerted to a personal injury collision involving a semi with possible entrapment at Colesville Rd. and Dale Dr. Rescue Squad 742 responded to the call with additional units from Silver Spring Station 1. Company 1 units arrived on scene first and confirmed one trapped up an embankment after getting T-boned by a tractor-trailer. Company 1 units stabilized the vehicle, cut power and were pulling their hydraulic rescue tools as the Squad arrived on scene. After positioning to provide access to the squad’s tool complement, the Wheaton crew pulled their tools and lights. To assist the truck company’s extrication effort, the squad crew removed both doors and the b-post on the driver’s side of the vehicle. Extreme caution was exercised while disentangling the patient as there was 12-14 inches of intrusion into the driver’s compartment. The patient was then safely extricated from the vehicle and care was transferred to the waiting EMS crews on scene. Within 20 minutes of arriving on scene the squad crew was packed up and back in service.
