On the afternoon of Sunday, March 16th, RS742B was on the air and alerted to a vehicle collision involving a rollover on the 10400 block of Ewell Ave. Wheaton’s RS742B, M742, and C742B responded along with Kensington Volunteers on E705B and A705. C701B arrived on the scene first and reported a vehicle on it’s side with 2 trapped, 1 unconscious. RS742B pulled up just after E705 and both units worked to rapidly stabilized the overturned vehicle. Using Paratech struts, cribbing, and come-alongs, the vehicle was sufficiently stabilized. The conscious patient was assisted out of the vehicle by the volunteers from Company 5. Using the hydraulic Hurst tools, RS742B crew made cuts in the A post and mid-way down the roof. The windshield and the remainder of the roof was cut with the sawzalls by RS742B and E705B crews. The unconscious patient was rapidly extricated thereafter onto a backboard. The patient was in cardiac arrest and CPR was started immediately after pulling her from the overturned vehicle. M742 crew assumed care of this patient, aggressively managing her on the way to the hospital. Upon arrival at the local trauma center, the patient had regained a pulse and blood pressure. The other patient was transported to the hospital by A705′s crew. Great job to all the volunteers on this call for their excellent work!

Many moons ago the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad initiated three young eager cadets onto Friday crew. For years the upper echelon of this organization doubted the abilities of these young members, condemning them to a life on the back of the ambulance. But, tonight that curse was broken for better or worse.
At approximately 2000 hours County dispatchers filled Box 2-8 for the apartment fire on the 600 block of Hudson Rd. The ‘Friday Fatties’ with their babysitter Chief Platky filled the assignment and responded on the initial dispatch. Despite being the last unit on scene the squad crew still managed to search division three with Company 19 and secure utilities. After 30 minutes of work, the squad crew cleaned up and returned home to their half eaten Szechwan Palace gourmet dinner.

On Monday March 10, 2008, at 1745 hours, Rescue Company 2 was dispatched along with other Montgomery County Fire Rescue units to the intersection of Connecticut Ave. and Randolph Rd. for a car overturned with people trapped. RS742B responded with both career and volunteer staffing. RS742B arrived on scene to find a car on its side with the driver still trapped inside. The crew started stabilization and to safely remove the driver from his vehicle. Using paratech struts and a tie-back, the vehicle was made stable and safe to work on. Since the driver was relatively unharmed, RS74B’s crew used a saw to cut out the front windshield through which the patient was extricated.

At around 0445 on the morning of Saturday, March 7, Rescue Squad 742B and other Montgomery County Fire Rescue units were called to the intersection of Piney Branch and Carroll Ave. for a report of a vehicle into a pole. First arriving units confirmed a single vehicle into a pole. Truck 2 arrived on scene and initiated the stabilization and removal of the trapped driver. RS742B arrived on scene shortly after and began placing tools and lights to remove the front passenger who was pinned by the dashboard. RS742B’s crew of 4 began removing the passenger side door. But due to the condition of the patient and the extent of damage to the vehicle, hydraulic rams could not be used without further injury to the patient. RS742B’s crew opted to push the seat back to remove the patient. All units returned to service shortly after.
