Jackknifed Tractor-Trailer on the Outer Loop

by Andrew Young

Around 2am on the morning of Sunday, August 26, Rescue Squad 28 and Ambulance 22 were dispatched to an assault on College View Dr. Simultaneously, Engine 191 was investigating a call from the state police on the outer loop of the Capital Beltway between Georgia Ave and Connecticut Ave. While RS28 and RC2-1 responded, E191 reported they were on scene of a jackknifed tractor-trailer off the road, behind a guardrail, in the woods and requested the full assignment. Montgomery quickly replaced RS28 on the assault and sent them to the collision. E191 determined that the driver of the vehicle was trapped in the cab, which had snapped around and began leaking fuel. The Company 7 Hazmat Unit responded to clean up the fuel.

E191′s crew made entry into the cab to assess the patient. RS28′s crew made entry into the cab by removing its windshield. Additionally the crew stabilized the leaning trailer with Paratech air-struts and load hugger straps. The patient was immobilized on a long backboard and loaded into a Stokes basket. The basket was then slid down a ladder and passed out of the woods by several firefighters. Care was then transferred to waiting EMS providers.
